Bid to remove tree buried in deep-rooted red tape By Noah Graham CRACROFT RESIDENT Tim Bowman wants a 130-year-old tree cut down because it is causing carnage to his property. The old english oak tree on his driveway has littered his property with acorns, sap, aphids and debris for the past 10 years, since he moved in with his wife, Michelle. Mr Bowman’s attempts to solve the issue by pruning the tree have not been successful as it is protected under the significant trees list which limits how much of the tree can be cut. On his own, Mr Bowman is allowed to cut branches off that are smaller than 50mm in diameter, anything larger and an arborist has to do the work, which cost him $1600 last time. However, Mr Bowman said even with an arborist cutting the branches, they work to certain guidelines as well, which does not fix the issues. He said leaves still litter the driveway, falling debris is still a danger to himself, his wife and their grandchildren. For about four to five weeks each year, acorns drop onto

the roof of their property and disrupts their sleep, Mr Bowman said. “You can forget about any sleep. It’s like there’s someone throwing rocks.” Mr Bowman said the ideal solution would be to have the tree cut down but he is unable to because of the tree’s status.
City council head of parks Andrew Rutledge said the owners made a submission to have the tree removed from the proposed significant trees list in 2015 but were unsuccessful. “No evidence was lodged by the residents nor did they ask to appear at any hearings,” Mr Rutledge said.

However, Mrs Bowman said when she lodged the submissions in 2015 it was presented as a choice, not a “must-do” to attend the hearings. Mr Rutledge said if the owners wished to have the tree removed from the significant trees list they can apply for resource consent which would cost
a minimum of $1000 but there is a chance it could cost more. Mrs Bowman said they would apply for the resource consent but wanted city council to pay for the consent. She said it is a hazard to the home and therefore falls with city council to pay.

He wants the tree cut down because of the issues it is causing; acorns on his driveway and roof, sap and aphids. Leaves litter his property. But he can’t cut it down because the tree is on the protected list. He can cut the tree back – but Tim says not enough to fix the problem. The acorns that drop on the roof keep he, and his wife, awake at night. On page 3, we reveal CCTV cameras are being put up to robbers targeting shops in the Woolston Village. Time will tell if they actually will be a deterrent. I suspect not. – Barry Clarke

CCTV cameras for Woolston
BUS ROUTES WORKSHOP Spreydon and Cashmere residents are being encouraged to voice their opinions on the area’s bus routes. The SpreydonCashmere Community Board has organised a mid-June workshop which will allow residents to discuss with the board and Environment Canterbury the issues they have with the system. The workshop will be held at the Beckenham Service Centre.
Bid to make businesses safer By Noah Graham STREET SURVEILLANCE cameras have gone up on Ferry Rd in an attempt to thwart robberies in the Woolston Village. On Wednesday, city council installed two sets of CCTV cameras on traffic lights outside Cycle Around Again and the Woolston Tavern to help monitor the road and protect Woolston Village shops. The Woolston Discounter has been a frequent target over the past year with nine robberies taking place in seven months. It was hit again on Sunday when a man armed with a pistol attempted to take cigarettes and lollies but dropped most of the items on the way out of the store. Store owner Sujan Barra said he had not been told of the surveillance cameras but hoped they would prevent his shop from being a frequent target. The Ferry Rd Night ‘n Day

Woolston Village Business Association Stephen Hardman said businesses were “very happy” that the cameras had been installed. “It’s good for the community. It’s a visible deterrent. “If there are any problems the police can follow up on it.” Around Again Cycles owner Leroy Kremers said although his

shop had not personally been targeted, he felt safer. “It’s good to know they are there. It’s reassuring.” Linwood Central Heathcote Community Board member Alexandra Davids said she hoped the cameras will help curb the crime in the area. She said $25,000 could be seen as a lot of money but when there have been robberies as much as there have been it is justified. “If people know they are being watched they are less likely to [commit a crime].”
PINK QUIZ SUCCESS The Woolston Club’s Pink Ribbon quiz night last week raised almost doubled the previous year. Last week more than $3000 was raised for Breast Cancer Foundation NZ with more than 40 groups participating. Club marketing, functions and events manager Victoria Laird was delighted by the success and the amount of people who attended. COMMUNITY SPACE About 50 people gathered last week to open a new small, temporary community space last week. The area is on Stanmore Rd and was created by Greening the Rubble and Te Whare Roimata groups for people to gather, play, eat and chat.

Needs of school support staff Green MP Eugenie Sage writes about her recent trip back to school and what she learned about support staff and their needs Recently I went back to school for a day. I’ve visited schools before but not spent a whole day sitting in on classes and talking to students and staff. The day was part of teacher union Te Riru Roa/ NZEI’s “Walking in the shoes of a school support staff member” initiative. The union has invited MPs to shadow teacher assistants, librarians, administration officers and other school support staff to learn more about their role. After a day at Waltham Primary School I was in awe of the commitment, dedication and skills of teachers and support staff. With 230 pupils, Waltham has 10 full-time teaching staff and seven teaching assistants. The relatively high ratio recognises the value of support staff in a busy classroom environment. They free up teachers to focus on

teaching and help maintain student and classroom wellbeing. Support staff have a vital role in ensuring that children reach their potential. At Waltham, teacher assistant Jan worked with different groups of three or four children to practice their reading and writing, ensure they grasped phonetics, and test their spelling. This helps ensure no child gets left behind. In another class, Neil focused on children with behavioural issues, enabling them to participate in a mainstream environment without disrupting other students’ learning. I watched Kelly take a group of seven students through exercises to calculate the perimeter of different sized rectangles. The absolute joy and sense of achievement one boy expressed when he got the correct answer was infectious. In Budget 2016, the National Government froze school operations grants. This has made it more difficult
for schools to make ends meet in terms of running costs. It’s meant many schools lack the funds to pay enough teacher aide hours for their students’ learning and support needs. It also means that support staff endure lower wages and insecure employment. They only get paid for contact hours at the school, not for preparation time or during school holidays, in spite of being unable to find short-term casual work during school holidays. Budget 2017 has increased operational grant funding for schools by a mere 1.3 per cent lower than the rate of inflation in the sector. Schools deserve better so that they can afford fairer pay for support staff, more secure work hours and increased allowances for the specialist tasks they do and skills they bring to our schools. We need to invest in our children and their education so they thrive.

Jason Gemmill – No. You do not need a cycle lane. What next? A dedicated lane for SUVs for parents to drop kids at school? Mutu Thompson – But the kids won’t use it if it’s inconvenient, which they are, so they’re
probably safer now with the painted bike lanes. Jim Johnstone – If you can’t ride a bike on the road without your own special lane. Walk. John Gamblin – Make them walk or use public transport. Chris Wilson – Ride on the footpath . . . electric scooters use the footpaths, so do skateboarders.

Cassels bottled beer launched
WOOLSTON RESIDENTS are the first in the country to try a newly-bottled brew. Shoppers at Woolston New World on Ferry Rd are able to buy Cassels and Sons Brewery’s milk stout and extra pale ale in the bottle. Last Friday’s tasting marked a day of celebration for the company as it was the first time it had bottled beer and sold it at a supermarket. Woolston Business Association chairman and Woolston New World owner Greg Boock said he was approached by the brewery’s director Zak Cassels to see if they would like to be the first supermarket in the country to
launch and sell the bottled beer. “I think it’s pretty awesome that two local companies can collaborate and launch a product locally like this,” he said. Mr Cassels said the milk stout was a favourite and won a trophy at the New Zealand 2011 Brewers Guild Award. He said the extra pale ale was a relatively new beer having only been brewed for about a year. Mr Cassels said the company plans to offer the beers nationwide from September. He also said they are planning to add two more bottled beers to the range later in the year.
In Brief LOWER SPEED SUBMISSIONS South Christchurch residents can voice their opinions whether they want speed limits reduced on a section of the Shag Rock Major Cycle Route. Scheme to get Rowley residents mobile A NEW cycle-lending scheme is helping Rowley residents get to and from work. The Rowley Resource Centre’s cycle-lending scheme started last week and allows community members without transport the chance to cycle to school, work, or the shops. Centre manager Donna McAleer said the scheme is in a trial stage and required people
to provide the centre with a $20 bond. However, she understood that some of the people who need the cycles most might not be able to afford the money. “We are working on a way to make it work for everyone,” she said. Ms McAleer said the centre has two cycles at the moment and it will get more if demand

increases. She said one is loaned to a woman so her grandson could cycle to school this term and the other will be loaned to someone starting a new job this week. At this stage, there was no time limit on how long people could borrow the cycles, Ms McAleer said. She hoped it would get to the stage where the cycles would
be loaned around the community when needed, and it was a community-led scheme. Ms McAleer said there were future plans for a maintenance hub. She said the idea was supported by RAD Bikes which supplied the cycles and Tower Junction’s Hub Bike Shop which supplied the helmets, locks and lights.

MAN ARRESTED FOR ARSON A 43-year-old man has been arrested and charged with wilful damage after he allegedly started a fire in front of a toilet complex on Deans Ave, Addington, on Sunday. A spokeswoman for police said they attended the incident at 6.20am and inquiries are ongoing. JAZZ CLUB REBORN The Southern Jazz band is back up-and-running. Jeff Bradley was one of the founding members of the original band more than 50 years ago and he has grouped together with four other New Zealand musicians. Providing a taste of Italy in the vineyard Wilma Laryn has co-owned and operated the Cracroft Chase Vineyard alongside her husband, Alessandro, for about 20 years. Wilma talks to Noah Graham about helping organise Christchurch’s first Italian festival, Ciao Italia, and Radio Cartolina How would you describe Ciao Italia? Ciao Italia fills a void. In Christchurch, there has never been an Italian festival. The idea has been around for awhile but only this year has it come to be. As a result of synergy among the Dante Alighieri Society, Italian Chamber of Commerce and The Colombo. The Italian film festival starts at the same day. On June 14 there will be a very compact set of events. We have about 25 exhibitors and more are still coming. There will be a bit of everything for everyone. They will showcase Italian fun, food and fanfare. There will be a

lot of food of all kinds including café espresso as well as wine which will be part imported from Italy and in-part produced locally by Italian migrants. There will be classical music as well as the Tarantella group which will host a choreographed event. There will be other things as well like a fashion parade, gnocchi demonstration – things like that. All around the mall there will be Italian cars. There will definitely be a Vespa and possibly an older Fiat Topolino. It is amazing how
the community has embraced this idea. When did you arrive in New Zealand? My husband, myself and my daughter arrived in 1996. Twenty years is a long time but frankly it could have been yesterday. A new town and a new country offer plenty of opportunities. Both my husband and myself are the kind of people to, on one side, embrace the opportunities and on the other side to give back to the community. Among the
opportunities was to be able to purchase a huge piece of land in town and establish a vineyard. Where did the vineyard idea come from, did you one in Italy? No, we didn’t operate a vineyard in Italy but we drank a lot of wine. We waited one year to decide what to do with the 23ha. And then my husband came out with this idea; ‘why don’t we start a winery.’ After the earthquake there were a lot of people who kept calling us and said
there are no venues in Christchurch and asked us to host events. We decided to open the cellar door and started to invite groups for tasting or also to celebrate small events in the vineyard and we’ve become quite popular. How was it, starting up a business you had little experience in? It was exciting. There were a lot of things to learn. We had to study the situation, the vineyard, the micro-climate. In the end it went better than we thought. The micro-climate is really quite strong in helping the growth of the vines and the ripening of the grapes. Also, the variety we chose, the pinos gris is typical of cool climate and does well in Canterbury but does not do well in Australia. We chose it to also be able to export it to Australia, that’s where half of our product goes. What makes a good wine? The first thing is the grapes. Start with wonderful, well-ripened grapes. Fiddle with them as little as possible and you will end up with a good product. We are a certified, sustainable vineyard and we don’t do much to the grapes. There are no chemicals involved.

and on the airwaves What do you like about owning and running a vineyard? The first is the contact with nature. The place is beautiful. It’s surrounded by the forestry of the Port Hills and so we get all the birds and the bird song. And then we were sort of adopted by the Cracroft Residents’ Association so we have people who come and work in the vineyard who are our friends. That has been wonderful. Because we do our distribution ourselves we get the contact with the clients. We know what they like and what the patrons like, it is a real way of knowing your market and goes beyond selling your wine. How did you start the radio programme? Plains FM is the local community radio and they had a lot of programmes but none in Italian. I happened to meet them and they invited me to start the programme and they gave me all the possible training. That was in 1999 and I’m still kicking, 18 years later. So why do you think it has appealed to you for so long? I’m a curious person. Everybody has a story. In all this time I’ve never had any problem filling my calendar. There is so much connecting the two countries.

From the war, from all the friendships that came out of the war and now everyone travels to Europe. There is so much going on. Also after the earthquakes a lot of Italians came to Christchurch for the rebuild. There are always things to tell. Besides radio there has been television. I produced and presented 10 episodes of Italian cooking for CTV. I did it with my daughter who was 10-years-old then. I still do some Italian cooking demonstrations. Is cooking a hobby for you? It’s a strong hobby for both of us. Because we are very busy we
have divided the kitchen. I take care of lunch and Alessandro takes care of dinner. At lunch I do all kinds of salads, fish and meats. At dinner he becomes the chef. He is more creative than I am. Almost every evening for the last 10 years we have been trying something different and he has been providing something completely different. We have about 200 cooking books and you can always modify the recipes. How did you two meet? We met through friends in Rome. In my weekends I was out with an Italian alpine club. I was doing rock climbing. But he
preferred sailing so we bought a very small sailing boat and started travelling together in the Mediterranean and we’ve been travelling since. Could you tell me about your family? We one daughter. We are a modern Italian family with one child. She’s an osteopath and is 27. My family was from Apulia in the heel of the boot that is Italy. I lived mostly in Rome where also my husband lived although he was from the north part of Italy originally. Then we lived in Tokyo for four years and then we moved to Milan and then to New Zealand. What do you think of Christchurch? Living in Christchurch is particularly exciting. From the earthquakes to the fire of the Port Hills that stopped just next to the vineyard, it’s been a quite interesting 20 years. What do you like to get up to in your spare time? I read a lot. I listen to music. Mostly classical music. I also like opera. I’ve been given a lot of opportunities and I hope I have given something back to Christchurch and the community.

Work on school progressing quickly CONSTRUCTION on Beckenham School is progressing faster than expected. The school was expecting the $6.8 million rebuild to be finished by January 2018 but it has been brought forward. Principal Sandy Hastings said with work on the West and East Hubs progressing quickly, pupils could be using the buildings soon with year 1 to 4 pupils expected to move in at the start of term three. The 430 students had been split between different sites after the school was damaged in the February 22, 2011, earthquake and the hall and library were damaged in fires about four years ago. After the damage, the senior students have been at the Champion St site while the junior students have been on the school’s site since the start construction which began in October last year. The rebuild involved replacing five blocks with two new eight-classroom blocks, replacing a special education satellite unit and refurbishing and upgrading the rest of the school.

BROCCOLI, WALNUT AND COTTAGE CHEESE PIES Ingredients 12 slices Bread 1/2 cup (8 Tbsp) Butter, melted, or olive oil, for brushing 2 Eggs 6 Tbsp Cottage cheese 3 Tbsp Walnuts, chopped ½ cup Cheddar cheese, grated 1 cup Broccoli, in small florets, steamed ½ tsp Salt Directions Make bread cases by brushing one side of each slice of bread with some melted butter or oil and pressing. Buttered side down, put in to muffin pans (if using thick bread flatten the bread out a little with your hand or a rolling pin first). Bake at 170 deg C for 20 minutes or until brown and very crisp. Take them out straight away and leave to cool on a cake rake to avoid going soggy. You can keep the bread cases in an airtight container for a few days if you are not making the pies straight away. Beat the eggs and mix through
the walnuts, cheddar, steamed broccoli, salt and a good grind of pepper. Fold in the cottage cheese. You want to keep blobs of cottage cheese through the mix. Place the bread cases back in to the muffin pans and spoon in the mixture. Bake in a 180 deg C oven for 15 minutes or until set through.

Cut some small waxy potatoes into discs (leave the skin on), brush them with oil and space them out on an oven tray. Roast them until they are just soft and nicely golden coloured. Chiropractors offer natural solution to stress-related ailments More than six years on from the Christchurch earthquake, many residents are still suffering from stress and stressrelated ailments as a result of the event. Dr Mary Patterson Chiropractor of the Christchurch Wellness Centre in Memorial Avenue says she is continually hearing from patients about how stress is affecting their lives and their health, a lot of which can be directly linked to the earthquakes. “Stress on the body can be physical, chemical or emotional. To be treated by the Charity Hospital you must: • Have been turned down in writing for treatment by the CDHB • Not have medical insurance • Not be able to afford the treatment privately (means tested) • Have a referral from your doctor * All dentistry and oral surgery patients need a dentist’s referral. Dentistry is available for WINZ clients only, whilst oral surgery may be available if you fit the above criteria.
